Common questions
It depends on the job. For most families the Tesla Model Y is the default: space, range and the Supercharger network. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers fast charging in CCS2 form, the Volkswagen ID.4 gives plenty of room and range for the money on the used market, and the BYD Atto 3 is the value pick. For seven seats it is the Kia EV9.

The Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 are the full seven-seaters sold new in NZ. Used, the Tesla Model X came with five, six or seven seats, and the Mercedes-Benz EQB offered a small third row. The Tesla Model Y L, on sale from 2026, has six. Right now there are 1 listings across models offered with seven seats. That includes five- and six-seat versions, so check each car's seat count.
Among SUVs sold here, the Kia EV9 (AWD) and BMW iX are rated to tow 2,500 kg braked, followed by the Tesla Model X at 2,250 kg and the Polestar 3 at 2,200 kg. The Model Y and the 84 kWh Ioniq 5 manage 1,600 kg. Every rating, with what towing does to range, is in towing with an EV in NZ.
The model list, lengths, seats, battery sizes and rated ranges are static figures for NZ-market cars from EVDB.nz, cross-checked against NZ motoring press and checked 17 October 2026. Batteries are usable capacity unless marked nominal; ranges are the manufacturer’s WLTP span across NZ variants unless another cycle is noted. Specs vary by model year and original market; confirm the individual car, especially an import. Real-world range is lower, especially in winter. Size class is by length: small under 4.4 m, mid-size 4.4 to 4.8 m, large over 4.8 m or with seven seats. Everything else is computed from the 436 active EV listings on Electric Dreams. Stock includes new cars and dealer demonstrators as well as used cars. Prices are asking prices, not sale prices; medians, not means, and only published where 3 or more listings back them. Listings asking under $2,000 are treated as placeholder prices and left out. Arriving-soon dealer stock is included and badged. A model with no live listing stays in its table; catalogued models also have a price-alert link. Seven-seat model counts include all seating variants, not just cars fitted with seven seats. This is a snapshot of what’s listed on Electric Dreams, not the whole NZ market.
