The Leaf has levelled up with every generation: the battery grew from 24 kWh in 2011 to 62 kWh in the e+, and range grew with it. That means there’s a Leaf for every budget: a great-value first EV at one end, an open-road tourer at the other. Here’s how each generation looks on the live market right now.
2011–15
The original that put NZ on electric. A proven, budget-friendly city commuter.

What the numbers say
“EV batteries die” is the objection that keeps Kiwis in petrol cars. The oldest Leafs on the market say otherwise: of the 30 kWh cars (2016–17) listed right now, the 11 whose sellers report battery health show a median of 84%. Seller-reported, so always verify with a battery check, but the year-by-year picture below tells the same story.

Across the 158 live listings whose sellers report battery health, the median state of health is 87%. A seller-reported figure is a claim, not a certificate, so always confirm with an independent battery check. Still, the year-by-year chart above shows the pattern holds across model years.
It comes down to how far you drive. The 24 and 30 kWh cars are great-value city runabouts, the 40 kWh second generation covers most Kiwi commutes with plenty in reserve, and the 62 kWh e+ handles open-road trips between towns. The index covers the 168 active Nissan Leaf listings on Electric Dreams and refreshes hourly. Figures are medians, not means, so one mis-keyed listing can’t skew them, and any figure backed by fewer than three listings shows as a dash rather than being passed off as an average. Each metric is computed only over the listings whose sellers supply that field, which is why the sample counts differ between figures. Battery health (state of health) is seller-reported and indicative, not independently verified, so always confirm with a battery health check before you buy. The range shown on each generation card is the manufacturer’s rating when new (WLTP for the 40 and 62 kWh packs, NEDC for the earlier cars that predate it), not a market statistic: sellers quote the range field inconsistently, so we don’t publish a median of it. Real-world range is lower than any rated figure and varies with battery health, conditions and driving. Prices are asking prices, not sale prices. Generations are identified from model year and pack size together. Sold and withdrawn cars are excluded: this is a snapshot of what’s listed on Electric Dreams right now, not the whole NZ market.
