Buying a used Tesla Model Y in NZ

Tesla launched the Model Y in New Zealand in mid-2022, so even the oldest used examples are young cars. Most on the market are the rear-wheel-drive version on an LFP battery; the dual-motor Long Range is the one to stretch to for range. A 2025 facelift restyled the car and lifted the Long Range's rated range, and a six-seat Model Y L followed in 2026.

As with the Model 3, check whether a car is NZ-new or a Japanese import before you compare prices: it changes the warranty and the charge port. For every Tesla on the market by model, see the Tesla Index; for how it compares with other SUVs, electric SUVs in NZ, compared.

Tesla doesn't publish pack sizes; these are nominal figures from independent databases, which is why listings quote 60, 75, 78 or 82 kWh. An LFP pack is happy charged to 100% regularly; a nickel pack prefers a daily limit of around 80 to 90%.

What to check on a used Model Y

  • NZ-new or a Japanese import. Ask before anything else. Tesla treats a car outside the market it was first sold in as a grey vehicle: it does not do warranty repairs on it in NZ, and connectivity, app features and over-the-air updates are not guaranteed. Japan-market cars also have Tesla's own charge port rather than the CCS2 port NZ-new cars use; specialists here convert them, but Supercharger access after a conversion is at Tesla's discretion.
  • Which warranty it still has. The battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years from first delivery: 160,000 km on the RWD, 192,000 km on the Long Range and Performance, with at least 70% capacity retained, and it transfers free to the next owner. The basic warranty was 4 years or 80,000 km on cars delivered before 2026, so a 2022 or 2023 car may be near the end of it.
  • RWD or Long Range. Listing titles aren't always right, and the two are priced very differently. The touchscreen's Software page names the version; a Long Range has a motor at each end and a higher rated range.
  • Glass. Stone chips in the windscreen and the glass roof are excluded from Tesla's warranty, so look closely and price any damage in.
  • Towing. The five-seat Model Y is rated to tow up to 1,600 kg braked when properly equipped. The six-seat Model Y L has a different rating, so check the exact car's manual, towbar and loaded-trailer limits before buying; see towing with an EV.

Common questions

How much is a used Tesla Model Y in NZ?

Right now 7 Tesla Model Ys are listed on Electric Dreams, asking $37,990 to $52,880, with a median of $49,880. The table above breaks that down by model year.

Is there a seven-seat Tesla Model Y in NZ?

No. NZ Model Ys are five-seaters; the six-seat Model Y L went on sale here in 2026. For seven seats, see the large SUVs in electric SUVs in NZ, compared.

Does a used Model Y have a heat pump?

Yes: every Model Y has one, which helps winter range.

Can a used Model Y use Tesla Superchargers?

An NZ-new one can, paying per kWh through the Tesla app. A Japanese import has Tesla's own port; once converted to CCS2 it can use other fast chargers, but Tesla decides whether it can Supercharge.

Model Y or Model 3?

The Model Y has the hatchback, the higher seat, the bigger boot and the 1,600 kg tow rating; the Model 3 is the cheaper way into a used Tesla on the same batteries.
