Buying a used Tesla Model 3 in NZ

The Model 3 went on sale in New Zealand in 2019 and is the most common used Tesla here. Nearly every car on the market is one of four versions: the early Standard Range Plus, the Shanghai-built Standard Range Plus and RWD on an LFP battery, or the dual-motor Long Range. Which one you are looking at matters more than the year, so decode the listing title with the table below before you compare prices.

Some used Model 3s here are Japanese imports rather than NZ-new cars. They can be good buying, but the warranty and charging position is different, so it is the first question to ask. For how the Model 3 sits against the Model Y, S and X, see the Tesla Index.

Which Model 3 is which

VersionYearsBatteryRated range (WLTP)Good to know
Standard Range Plus (US-built)2019 to 2020About 50 kWh, nickel409 kmThe first NZ cars. No heat pump.
Standard Range Plus (Shanghai)Late 2020 to 2021About 55 kWh, LFP448 kmHeat pump and powered boot arrived with the 2021 refresh.
RWD2022 to 2023About 60 kWh, LFP491 kmThe Standard Range Plus renamed, with a bigger pack.
Long Range AWD2021 to 2023About 78 kWh, nickel602 to 614 kmDual motor, 250 kW peak charging.
Facelift (Highland)2024 onRWD or Long RangeAbout 520 to 629 kmRestyled inside and out.

Tesla doesn't publish pack sizes, so listings quote 55, 57.5, 60, 75, 78 or 82 kWh for the same few packs; the figures here are nominal, from independent databases. An LFP pack is happy charged to 100% regularly; a nickel pack prefers a daily limit of around 80 to 90%.

What to check on a used Model 3

  • NZ-new or a Japanese import. Ask before anything else. Tesla treats a car outside the market it was first sold in as a grey vehicle: it does not do warranty repairs on it in NZ, and connectivity, app features and over-the-air updates are not guaranteed. Japan-market cars also have Tesla's own charge port rather than the CCS2 port NZ-new cars use; specialists here convert them, but Supercharger access after a conversion is at Tesla's discretion.
  • What's left of the battery warranty. Tesla covers the battery and drive unit for 8 years from first delivery: 160,000 km on the Standard Range Plus and RWD, 192,000 km on the Long Range and Performance, with at least 70% capacity retained. It transfers to the next owner at no cost, but only in the region the car was first registered, so a 2019 car's cover ends in 2027.
  • Front suspension noise. Listen for creaks from the front on slow, tight turns. Tesla's service guidance includes checking the upper control arms for this noise. Have any noise diagnosed and ask Tesla whether a repair is covered for that VIN; don't assume every used car qualifies for a free repair.
  • The low-voltage battery and the screen computer. The touchscreen's Software page (Additional Vehicle Information) identifies both. Later cars moved from a 12-volt lead-acid battery to a roughly 16-volt lithium-ion battery, and from an Intel Atom computer to AMD Ryzen. The changeover dates differ by factory and component, so check the car rather than relying on its registration year.
  • Glass. Stone chips in the windscreen and glass roof are excluded from Tesla's warranty, so look closely and price any damage in.
  • Self-driving software. If a listing includes Full Self-Driving, check with Tesla using the VIN that it stays with the car. In NZ the supervised version runs only on Hardware 4 cars so far.

Common questions

How much is a used Tesla Model 3 in NZ?

Right now 11 Tesla Model 3s are listed on Electric Dreams, asking $34,995 to $42,990, with a median of $40,880. The table above breaks that down by model year.

Can a used Model 3 use Tesla Superchargers?

An NZ-new one can: NZ Superchargers are pay-per-use through the Tesla app. A Japanese import arrives with Tesla's own port; once converted to CCS2 it can use other fast chargers, but Tesla decides whether it can Supercharge.

Which Model 3 has the LFP battery?

Common examples are the Shanghai-built Standard Range Plus from late 2020 to 2021 and the RWD from 2022 onwards, including the Highland RWD. The early US-built Standard Range Plus, Long Range and Performance versions use nickel-based packs. Confirm the battery type on the car's Additional Vehicle Information screen.

Can a Tesla Model 3 tow?

Yes, up to 1,000 kg braked on the non-Performance versions, which is a box trailer or a small boat rather than a caravan. Tesla's official tow pack doesn't cover the Performance. See towing with an EV for what towing does to range.

Model 3 or Model Y?

The Model 3 is the cheaper way into a used Tesla; the Model Y adds a hatchback, a higher seat, more boot space and a 1,600 kg tow rating. Both share the same batteries and charging.
